Das Bankhaus Sal. Oppenheim konnte bis zum seinem Untergang auf eine lange und in geschäftlicher Hinsicht erfolgreiche Geschichte zurückblicken. Weder Napoleon, etliche Wirtschaftskrisen und Börsenkräche noch der 1. und 2. Weltkrieg konnten die Bank aus der Bahn werfen. Stattdessen wurden dem Haus ihr Investment in einem Warenhauskonzern und einige Geschäftsbeziehungen, die man in der guten alten Zeit wahrscheinlich gemieden hätte, zum Verhängnis.
Bereits im Jahr 2011 nahm sich eine Filmdokumentation des Niedergangs von Sal. Oppenheim an.
